How to Live
Let us live deep enough
till there is only one direction…
and slow enough till there is only
the beginning of time…
and loud enough in our hearts
till there is no need to speak…
~ from Earth Prayer by Mark Nepo
To me, living “deep enough” means to live a life so connected to my purpose and mission that each decision brings me into greater alignment with that “why.” I move closer to becoming my best possible self. Every moment is the “beginning of time” because it is a new opportunity. Instead of unconsciously responding to situations, I try to become aware of my habitual patterns. If I make a mistake, can I admit it and start fresh? Can I be so cognizant of my thoughts and actions that I can stop myself before I make the mistake?
There’s “no need to speak,” if I am able to listen wholeheartedly to another person. I don’t need to inject my view, my story on theirs. I can accept where they are with compassion and understanding. I can just be with them and let them be where they are.
Of course, I don’t do this all the time. That’s an unrealistic expectation for anyone. Sometimes I am shallow and selfish and insist on telling everyone what I think they should do. But I can do a better job of living deeply, slowly, and wholeheartedly more often, and the more I do it, the more likely I am to continue doing it.
